Addition Strategies Guide

Double Trouble- Memorize your doubles facts ( 1+1, 2+2, 3+3, 4+4, 5+5, 6+6, 7+7, 8+8, 9+9)
 
Doubles Plus One = 1+ 2=  Always double the smaller number ( circle it)  and add one more. So  1+1 = 2 and 1 more is 3.
 
The Squish Rule- When adding 10 to a one digit number, you squish out the zero and replace it with the other number being added. 10+ 6 = take out the zero and put in the 6= 16
 
The In Betweenies- 6+8, Think what is in between 6 and 8, It is 7, So double the 7 and your answer is 14.
 
Catch the Bigger Number- When all else fails, you can always circle the bigger number and count up the number you are adding to get the answer by using touch points.
3+4= circle the four, say 4 . touch points ( say 5, 6, 7). So 3=4+7
