NJDOE Tax Levy Incentive Aid Information

Statement from the Dennis Township Board of Education - May 1, 2025 – Dennis Township, NJ

The Dennis Township Board of Education is pleased to announce the award of $1,790,295 through the New Jersey Department of Education’s Tax Levy Incentive Aid Program. This critical funding provides a much-needed lifeline to our district, which has faced significant state aid reductions under the current school funding formula, commonly known as “S-2.”

Since 2018, Dennis Township School District has endured a loss of over $4 million in state aid. During this time, the cost of providing a “thorough and efficient” education—as required by the New Jersey State Constitution—has continued to rise. These funding reductions have severely impacted our ability to deliver the level of education our students deserve, forcing difficult decisions including the elimination of staff positions, curriculum resources, technology, and essential classroom supplies.

This one-time aid will allow the district to restore critical staffing, upgrade educational programs and technology, and replenish much-needed supplies that were previously cut due to budget constraints. The support comes at a vital time and reflects the efforts of district leaders, board members, and local officials who have worked tirelessly to advocate for our students and staff.

The Tax Levy Incentive Aid Program allows a one-time exception to the State’s 2% cap on tax levy increases and was specifically designed to assist districts that are both under adequacy and under their calculated local fair share. The tax impact of this increase is estimated at $186.60 per $100,000 of assessed property value and remains contingent on approval of the FY 2026 State Appropriations Act.

While this award provides temporary relief, it does not resolve the broader financial challenges facing Dennis Township. The Board of Education continues to work closely with district administration to explore long-term cost-saving strategies, including potential reductions in administrative staffing, facility consolidation, and leasing opportunities.

Earlier this year, district leadership joined local and State representatives in meeting with NJDOE Commissioner Kevin Dehmer to express concerns over the inequities created by the current funding formula. We remain committed to advocating at both the State and local level to ensure our students receive the education they are entitled to.

We thank our community for their continued support and understanding as we work together to navigate these challenges and invest in the future of our children.
